Melbourne Aquarium

A couple weeks ago, as we were missing travelling, James and I took the time to act as tourists in our own city. I had never been to the aquarium in Melbourne and James hadn't been for ages so we grabbed out the camera and headed off into the city to the Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium!

It's located on the north bank of the Yarra river which runs along the south edge of the city. It's a beautiful walk from Flinders St Station past some sculptures and under bridges. However, the entrance to the aquarium is off Flinders Street so you have to either turn off at the signs down a little path or walk all the way around the aquarium (guess which one James and I did not having read the signs properly...).

Once we (finally) got inside, we enjoyed looking at all of the sea life common to the area and some from other near by seas. We took part in the Art Aquarium, where I drew a mermaid inside the fish shape I was given, and we even got to see the baby penguins being fed. There are lots of those little domes where you can put your head into the the tank which was a great way for me to get my mermaid fix!

It's smaller than the Sydney Aquarium but it was a really fun experience. Going during the week meant it wasn't really crowded and since it's right near the city you're a stone throw away from cheap food for lunch! It was a great way to feel like we were travelling without having to really go anywhere.
